Board Member Tamara Makoni speaks about unconscious bias in the workplace
On 27 November, Brussels Binder board member Tamara Makoni participated in the final conference of Beyond Unconscious Bias (Beyunbi), a project zooming in on unconscious bias in leadership and management.
In her intervention, Tamara highlighted two common biases in the workplace: the affinity bias (a good feeling about someone because you share similarities) and the proximity bias (having a more positive views of team members you see often).
She also shared advice on how to make these biases more explicit for yourself and how to become aware of the shortcuts in your brain. For example:
- check how much you actually know about this person;
- challenge yourself by asking a trusted peer for their opinion;
- be curious to learn about people and cultures that are different from you.
